Sometimes, Jared and Audrey would argue with each other or with Granny.
Granny would try to mediate or otherwise cool them down, and she would often say, “don't get nervous!”
Her usage was, of course, an antiquated connotation of nervous to mean that one's nerves were getting affected. Like, they were getting on each other's nerves.
But as kids, Jared and Audrey thought Granny was saying they were getting scared. This accusation only made them ten times more upset.
“I'M NOT NERVOUS!” they'd screech. Granny probably thought they were trying to assure her they weren't angry, but obviously, their screeching undermined that.
This confusion over the two definitions was never resolved. ❐
