JOSH AND JARED'S CLUBHOUSE

Listening to a kid's random mixtape

One summer, while home from college, Josh, Jared, and Sris were hanging out. They went to Spec's Music, the now-defunct South Miami record store, and browsed the aisles. As they left, they noticed someone had left a stack of their own personal mix CDs by the front, presumably to promote themselves. For a laugh, the guys grabbed one of the CDs before heading back to Sris's house.

At Sris's, they were bored and decided to throw on the album. It turned out to be some kid's completely generic, forgettable, low-quality hip hop mixtape with over-the-top sound effects and annoyingly overblown production. There was absolutely nothing noteworthy about it. The guys grew tired of it immediately and started commenting on how bad it was.

Jared pointed out that, whether they liked it or not, what they were doing was probably exactly what the rapper was hoping for. Three strangers actually picked up and listened to his music. This was more successful publicity than they could say about any of their own creative projects.  ❒
