“Remember when you hated me?” and underwater

When Jared, Audrey, and Toby were much younger, there was a “rumor” that Jared hated Toby. This rumor was started and propagated by Toby.

It wasn't that Jared actually hated Toby — he just didn't like that when they were all at temple, Audrey and Toby would go off and talk by themselves. Jared would be left alone, because the only kids his own age who were EVER there were utter dumdums who either ate their own feet or smelled like pure apple juice, or both.

Back then, Toby didn't know that Jared NEEDED Audrey to be there. He's only slightly better now, but at the time, he could not mask his insanity around temple without her companionship. He was also completely incapable of hiding when he felt hurt from being left out, leading to a palpable projection and perception of “hate.”

Years later, when it was all in the past, Toby liked to ask Jared, “Remember when you hated me?” (to which he would explain the above). Actually, Jared would insist, it was she who hated him.

The three of them also liked leaving posts on each other's Facebook walls, and in the 2010s, Facebook added the ability to leave video posts. Toby once left Jared a wall video, again asking, “Remember when you hated me?”

But the quality of the video was so poor that the audio came out blocky. It ended up sounding like Toby was asking the question underwater. From then on, the question they would both ask each other became, “Remember when you hated me underwater?”

Jared has searched the full history of their Facebook interactions for that video, but it's absolutely gone.  ❒
