Pepe and Tita

In elementary school Spanish class, Jared had to complete several lessons that came from a themed workbook.

The workbook featured two mascot characters, a little boy named Pepe and a little girl named Tita. They were either siblings or friends, and they looked like little Cabbage Patch- or stuffed pillow-people.

Jared didn't think much about them... or care.

But strangely — inexplicably! — Memo got a huge kick out of the characters, particularly Tita.

She noted how the name was close to tia, the Spanish word for aunt, and she actually told Nan about Tita the next time they spoke on the phone. This was for no reason other than Tita sounding like tia and Nan being Jared's aunt. It's unknown how Nan responded to the information.

Even at that very young age, Jared wondered what exactly Memo was so excited about.  ❐
